Summary of Apple's October 2014 Media Event

Apple held a media event on October 16, 2014 at their Cupertino HQ. Here is a summary of the event's details:

Welcome

  • Tim Cook tags the stage and welcomes everyone to the event
  • Reviews the recent iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launch
  • Apple set a record (by a large margin) for the number of orders taken
  • "This is our biggest iPhone launch... ever"
  • Over 500 banks signed up to support Apple Pay
  • Apple Pay works online as well as in the store
  • "We believe that Apple Pay will be HUGE!"
  • Apple Pay go lives on Monday (October 20, 2014)
  • "WatchKit" (Apple's set of APIs for Apple Watch) launches next month
  • Apple Watch still on schedule to launch in early 2015
  • "Apple's products are designed to work seamlessly with each other, as the result of iOS 8 and OS X"

iOS 8, iOS 8.1 & OS X Yosemite

  • Craig Federighi takes the stake
  • iOS 8 was released less than a month ago and 48% of iOS devices have it installed
  • "The new features in iOS 8 make it so much easier to communicate"
  • Reviews the usefulness of Extensions (which is petty awesome, if you haven't used them, you should explore the possibilities)

  • The Camera Roll is coming back!
  • Public beta of the new Photos app will be available in iOS 8.1

  • iCloud Drive allows you to store any file in the cloud, accessible from virtually any device
  • "If you're having to work under extreme duress, iCloud Drive also works on a PC"
  • iCloud is integral to things working seamlessly
  • Yosemite and iOS 8 allows you to AirDrop between iOS device and Mac
  • Continuity (new in Yosemite) is going to be a great feature that everyone will use
  • Craig spends some time to demo Continuity (honestly, it's incredible stuff!)
  • Apple Watch will have a remote app to control Keynote on Yosemite
  • OS X Yosemite is available TODAY for free on the Mac App Store
  • iOS 8.1 is available Monday for free
  • iWork is available TODAY for free on the Mac App Store

iPad

  • Tom Cook takes the stage

  • Apple has sold more than 225 million iPads around the world since the first version
  • The iPad has been consistently rated #1 in customer satisfaction
  • The iPad mini Retina has scored a 100% customer satisfaction (wow!)
  • "We think the success of the iPad is due to the unique blend of simplicity and functionality"
  • More than 675,000 apps available today for iPad
  • iPad is #1 in usage, education and business
  • Apple unveils the new iPad Air 2
  • "It's unbelievably gorgeous"
  • Phil Schiller takes the stage
  • "Thinnest iPad we've ever made... only 6.1mm thin" (the world's thinnest tablet)
  • The display technology is now optically bonded, reducing the overall thickness
  • A8X processor created specifically for iPad Air 2 (40% faster, 3 billion transistors, 2.5x faster graphics)
  • iPad Air 2 continues to feature a 10+ hour batter life
  • All-new iSight camera with better specifications (8MP sensor with 1080p HD video support)

  • Touch ID now included (yay!)
  • Making purchases on the iPad Air 2 just got easier with Apple Pay integration (not designed for in-store purchased... no NFC chip)
  • Pixelmator will have an app for iPad Air 2!! (can't wait for that one!)... due later this month
  • Replay (video-editor) is available today for free and looks awesome!
  • iPad Air 2 will be available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold
  • Pricing for WiFi model: $499 (16 GB), $599 (64 GB), $699 (128 GB)
  • LTE models available at the same prices plus $130
  • iPad mini 3 also available today starting at $399
  • Previous model iPads available at reduced prices
  • Original iPad mini will continue to be sold for $249
  • New iPads will be available for pre-order tomorrow (October 17, 2014) and will be available in stores next week!

Mac

  • The Mac business grew 18% YOY while the competition shrunk
  • "For customers who want a higher level of performance, our users love the MacBook Pro"
  • Apple unveils iMac with Retina display with 5120x2880 pixels (14.7 million pixels)
  • "World's highest resolution display and we call it the Retina 5K display"
  • Lots of new technology invented in order to support Retina 5K
  • Display on the new iMac is as thin as 5mm
  • Editing photos and video is a dream on the new iMac (and Yosemite looks stunning!)
  • Thunderbolt 2 included
  • Standard 1 TB Fusion drive
  • Faster CPU, graphics
  • New iMac Retina prices start at just $2,499

  • Mac mini has also been updated with faster processor, graphics, Thunderbolt and WiFi
